Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
