The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
