Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in power within the urban setting.
Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.
The Soldiers Table Revealed
The latest chapter ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.
The combat-focused team includes Teor (portrayed by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).
Why Split the Party?
Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.
Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Explorers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.
Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a violent opening clash with the enemy group.
A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing started the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to auction.
The traitor then paid off his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.
Individual Reasons
Moreover, each character has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
- Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
- The warrior and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to eliminate Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their status as important members in the influential clan could help the party reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that rule Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city too risky:
- The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
- The warrior and The healer defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- Teor is wanted dead by the clan.
This means them few options but to head to Timmony in quest for the traitor.
